What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment involves removing the infected soft tissue (pulp) from inside the tooth, which is made up of the nerve and blood vessels of the tooth. The tooth may have become infected as a result of decay or injury. If you’ve noticed that one of your teeth has become darker, this may be the reason.

Root canal treatment is used to remove the infection, and clean out the inside of the tooth, to prevent its return. This treatment may be necessary to save your natural tooth if the pulp tissue is irreversibly damaged by the bacteria associated with decay, very deep fillings, tooth fracture, trauma, or periodontal disease.

Involving little or no pain, root canal treatment usually requires two visits to complete, and once the infection is cleared, the tooth may be filled.
